I decided to stop doing the other lessons for this week and concentrate on the important basics of the alphabet and penmanship of the letters, as well as counting 1-20 with ease and knowing the numbers by site. 11-20 are the main focus, as she knows the smaller numbers.  Morgan can count on her own 1-20 with ease, it's the site of the numbers 11-20 and having to pick the number out when asked as well as asked what number each flashcard 11-20 is. #13 seems to be the difficult one right now and she gets frustrated so we take it slow.
We will resume the other lessons in week 2 since penmanship and recognition of A-Z and 1-20 are frequent on her mind. Math and English in week 2 will be a review until I feel we are ready to move onto the next area of learning. These are basics and need to be learned now.

Day 4

Reviewed with Morgan on number recognition 1-20.
13 seems to be our stump, but we are going to get it!

We did a review of letters up to letter J today, slowing down
to make our letters correctly. She knows letter recognition, it's still
just penmanship, so we will get through this quickly. :)
Penmanship is something we can work on as we go.....

We didn't do any of our other studies today.
A schedule, a routine is something we still need to get it all done during the day.
All of us are in this together and just learning as we go what works best for us!

Morgan loses first top tooth!

Morgan lost her first front top tooth today, and the one next to it is not
far from it! It's loose and sticking out so within a few days, I'm sure we'll
see Morgan with no front top teeth!
This was the first tooth we were able to save for the tooth fairy, as she swallowed
the other teeth when they were loose, I believe was 2 or 3 teeth from the bottom
that she has lost total so far.

Day 3; Back to Work!

Review, review, review.....
I'm looking for new ways online to make this fun because the things that Morgan needs to review is mostly penmanship, so how do you make that fun?
She writes the entire alphabet daily so we can see the progress
of her penmanship.
I could tell she was getting bored writing the letters that
many times so I circled only 3 for her to do so we could
move on to the next letter. She seems to concentrate
better when there aren't so many to do at once.

finding the letters out of a sentence or group of letters
is an easy tasks for Morgan.

spacing between the letters is an issue right now, going all the way
to the top and bottom of the lines to "complete" the letter
and putting the "leg" of a letter on the correct side.

And another thing we need to get down is going through the flash cards and recognizing the numbers "over ten" when she sees them. This is just repetition and I know she'll get it... it's only Day 3! :0

Need to work on writing numbers... 2's take some thought... and closing zero's

Penmanship of her numbers need work as well. They get turned around
backwards, and working on what comes before a number is still
something we need to work on.

She colored the healthy foods, X on the unhealthy foods.
She knew these with ease as she eats healthy anyway.

Skipped a Day; Freedoms of Homeschooling!

Wednesday August 25, 2010

Today we did not do any homeschooling work.
After coming home from our family trip in Texas, we had fleas in our house, so it was time to take action!
So I spent half a fortune, lol ($65), and set off 9 flea bombs and 3 canisters of flea carpet powder.
So the kids and I went to the movies, saw Return of Nanny McPhee, went out to eat, went shopping... and stayed away from the house for a good 6 hours to let the "stink bombs" air out a bit!
All in all, it was a fun day of activities just the kids and I and we got rid of all the fleas :)

The end of the movie... it was a good one!
Return of Nanny McPhee....
We were the ONLY 3 PEOPLE in the theatre so that was exciting!
We sat in the very back row right as you come into the theatre, at times it was
odd not to hear anyone else laugh during the funny parts, and kind of eerie all in one!
Surprised they ran the movie just for us, but it was a good time anyway! :)
We had popcorn, a drink, and of course we had to have candy!!!!!!!!

Weston: Day 2

With Weston today we did a review of yesterday.
He did these with ease, knowing what started with "A"

We are sticking with the basics of learning the color green, the shape circle, the number 0 zero.
He is doing very well with tracing the lines from the beginning to the end and how to hold the pencil.
He changes from left to right hand as he wants, I do not push for him to write with only one, I want it to be his own choice and what feels "right" for him.
His attention span was a bit shorter today, so I let him go play while I worked with Morgan on her schoolwork as she has areas that need attention at this time.

Morgan: Day 2

August 24, 2010

Math:
Today I used the flashcards, first 1-30 to see if she knows her numbers. She did as long as we were going in order, I think she was counting from memory more than looking at the actual number on the card, so I mixed them up a bit. Then I found out she isn't as comfortable with "seeing and knowing" the numbers as I thought, from learning in public Kindergarten last year. (So thankful she's home with me this year!)
And I had her write her numbers 1-10. Then we did some pages out of her learning books along with ones I printed that had her write the number plus the written out word of the number, which she had never done before. She did well with it, but is not for sure she knows them on her own, so we will continue this for the week. I am slowing it down and not pushing as hard as I had originally planned as I see gaps in areas of her learning that need to be corrected before we move on.

I'm a tad disappointed in the "lack of" learning she did in Kindergarten last year. Standards say they should have been able to count 1-100 but that didn't happen. I fear that "site" of the number was not taught. Amazing what you realize what your child WASN'T taught when you sit down and start teaching them yourselves.... so glad we made this decision to homeschool this year.

Geography:
Oklahoma, we talked about this is the state we live in. I bought a states book at the Half Price Book Store this past week in Texas while visiting family. It gives general information on each state, writing with dry erasers so the lessons can be done again.

English:
We are sticking with the basics for now, she recognizes the letters when she has to circle them out of a number of letters, she knows which one is "A" for example, but her penmanship is not where I want it to be to continue with our work. I think it's better to spend more time making it right instead of hurrying to the next subject. So today we practiced writing the capital and lower case A-D. I had her do many different pages, so that is why I didn't get as far with her in the alphabet today as I had hoped, but I want it to be correct, as this is the fundamentals.

Science:
We talked about things you do during the Day and Night. There were a few worksheets that I found online that she did where you recognize the activities done and when during the day/night.

Health:
We did a few worksheets circling what healthy foods are and what we like to eat. The kids pretty much each all the veggies and fruits we discussed today so they were glad to hear they were healthy.

Spelling:
Today she wrote the spelling words:  to, the, a, and, is, look. We also looked them up in her first dictionary, as a lesson to learn how to look up words and another way for her to recognize seeing the words for her memory bank!

Reading:
We read through the print off book "Zac the Rat" together. We will read it together many times then have her read it herself.

Weston: first day of PreK

WESTON

We started with Weston on August 23, 2010 Monday as well. He is starting his preK work, as he has never been in school before so everything is new to him.

English:
We started with the letter "A" today.
He traced the capital and lower case A and seemed to enjoy repeating it on his own. Then he circled the letter A that he found on the pages of pictures like Apple, Alligator, Alien.

Math:
He learned what a circle is as well as the number "0" zero.
He sees the similarity between the two.
He also circled "circles" and the number "0" on pages I printed as well as ones I pulled out of his learning books.

Weston learning Ants "A" and Circles and the color Green!

Art:
We learned about the color "green". He colored the green alligators and also changed when he wanted to color the water blue, he knew the difference.

Geography:
He listed as Morgan and I talked about living in Oklahoma. I just want him familiar with hearing it so learning in the next couple of years will be easier.

Science:
The same goes with learning Day and Night. He understands that we wake up in the Day and go to bed in the Night. And that it's light during Day and dark during Night. This is a good beginning for his age.

Health:
I also has him tell me about the foods he likes to eat, we made a list and talked about whether they were healthy or not.

Music:
We read/sang "The Ants Go Marching On", as to stay with the letter "A" theme for the week. He got in the rhythm of things as I read/sang the song to him. He pretended to march right along!

Writing:
We are starting with "tracing" going from beginning to end. He traces over the lines to strengthen his ability to move the pencil where he wants it to go.

Morgan: first day of 1st grade

Today we started our homeschooling. August 23, 2010. Monday.

MORGAN
Morgan is starting 1st grade this year.
To get back in the swing of schoolwork, we kept it simple today.

Daily:
We did the Pledge of Allegiance, had her write her full name, the day and date of today with the year, then her address, her phone number, how old she is, when her birthday is, her mom's name, her dad's name, and her dad's phone number. This is something we will do everyday until she can recite it herself as well as write it herself.

English:
Today I let her write the entire alphabet in lower case and capital letters on "indention paper" where all you have to do is follow the lines on how to make your letters correctly. I can see we need improvement with some letters. So daily we will be writing our letters until they are correct.

Math:
I had Morgan count as far as she could go on her own. She got to 30, but I was not convinced she felt strongly about remembering the numbers she learned last year in Kindergarten so we will continue to work on them.

Geography:
We talked about where we live, the state of Oklahoma. We will be learning about our own state first.

Science:
We are going to be starting on learning the difference between Day and Night. We briefly talked about it today, figuring out how much she knows about the differences.

Health:
We are starting with the introduction to food and healthy eating. We talked about things we like to eat and whether Morgan thinks it is healthy or not.

Spelling:
We are starting with the small words in the first reader book. The words are: to, the, a, and, is, look. This will continue for the entire week.

Reading:
Our first reader book which I printed off the computer is "Zac the Rat", which will be using the above spelling words in the book.
